Falconry: The art of not getting scratched

Demetri smiled as her finger ran down the breast of Aditi, watching as his large dark eyes blinked languorously in pleasure, his beak emitting a single prrp! of pleasure. Her falcon had been responsible for the increasing numbers of redtail haws in the mews, but in the ten years since her rise to Falconer, Demetri had taken on owls, peregrines and other types of raptors. Master Falconer Farouk had expressed that if she showed any more dedication toward taking care of the birds, he'd have to raise her to the same status as herself. Shaking off the compliment with a laugh, she quipped, "But then I wouldn't be Aes Sedai anymore!"

In truth, she loved the birds and loved hunting with them, but her own promotion to General had left her with even less time to spend with them so she found herself sending other apprentice Falconers in her stead to learn on the birds she herself had learned upon. Aditi and Sereine were still considered unequivocally hers, though, as she'd raised both from the egg and developed bonds with them over the past fifteen years.

"It's nice to see an Aes Sedai down here from time to time."

Demetri turned to find the blonde Head Gaidin leaning casually against the doorframe, arms crossed easily and his entire manner exuding a casual appearance. The smile on his face was welcoming, not mocking and despite his lack of formality in addressing her, Jield Gaidin still emitted a sense of deep respect for her as an Aes Sedai. Smiling at him, she replied, "I think they'd find my rooms if I didn't come here often. Especially since Aditi's going to be a father again in a few more days."

The Gaidin nodded, pausing for a moment. "I'd like it if you'd share your knowledge and passion for it with some of the other Trainees. I'd ask Farouk Gaidin, but I think that it might be more interesting for them to see that falconry isn't just for Gaidin, that it's for anyone who has a passion to learn it." Demetri frowned, thinking over her schedule, understanding his reasons and wondering if she could take time from her day even for a few hours to give a bunch of trainees a shallow insight into the in depth life of a falconer. "Please, Aes Sedai, I would appreciate it very much."

There was no hint of supplication in his voice, only sincerity and she nodded her head, blond hair falling into her eyes before she pushed it away again. "Of course, Jield Gaidin. Let them know to be near the mews in three days and I'll give them an education."

Her tall, lean frame was swathed in forest green thin wool in order to protect herself against the unseasonably cold spring day; it was windier than normal, which meant her shoulder length honey hued hair was pulled back with a ribbon, giving all an unhindered view of her high cheekbones, prominent nose and blue-green eyes beneath pale brows. No one would mistake her ageless appearance for anything less than an Aes Sedai, even if she didn't have the Great Serpent ring coiled about her fourth finger on her right hand, but she kept it there nonetheless.

The hawks and falcons would like the wind, knowing it'd give them plenty of lift to glide and circle the grounds in order to find their prey.

She was nervous, though. Any one of those birds in the mews were not tamed or domesticated, no matter how well trained they were, and she didn't possess a Talent for Healing should some over eager Trainee stick their finger within biting distance. And with a bunch of excited people around, any one of the newer birds might get nervous and send their talons for exposed skin.

Arriving down at the mews an hour ahead of time, she was fortunate in that there didn't seem to be anyone there incredibly early; it gave her time to set out the posts, to get the hoods on the falcons and try to settle Aditi and a couple other hawks. Demetri wanted to provide them with a vast array of different predatory birds so she even brought out Whisper, the owl they'd managed to capture in Amadician forest six years ago. "Now you behave, Whisper, don't make me look bad in front of the Trainees." She shook her finger softly at him and then placed him in a box specially designed to house birds who might otherwise try attacking one another when in sight of each other. Each of the hawks, excluding Aditi, had been housed in duplicate boxes to await their presentations.

Her class was relatively full with interested and eager Trainees, even a few Accepted had appeared to listen to her lecture. As the bell tolled High, she stepped forward. "Good afternoon, ladies and gentleman. I'm Demetri Sedai of the Green Ajah and today I'm going to give you a basic instruction on falconry. I expect to go over the different types of raptors used in falconry, their differences and you'll be given a chance to handle them. At the end of the lesson, we'll take several of the birds on a hunt so you can see them in action and interact with them."

She gestured to the table beside her, a table that had thick leather gloves, falconer's gloves, piled high. "If you would, please tell me your name and what interests you about falconry and then come up and get a glove."

OOC: Okay ladies and gents! This lesson is open to anyone except for Novices, so feel free to join up! I'll be putting up Part 1 on the 20th to get everyone started.

Please note! I am warning you right here and right now that I am reserving the right to inflict injury on your character if they act in a manner that would cause one of the birds to become agitated. You can either do this on purpose because you think it'll be great fun or it could happen on total accident and you truly don't know until I write in the injury. =) It's a bit of a twist but it goes with the territory of working with raptors. (And yes, I have a personal passion for falconry OOC myself LOL)
