Run Away

Gah. Sunlight. Well, lots of blurry brightness anyway. Valla turned the small misshapen pillow over and let her cheek rest again on the cool fabric. Somewhere outside a clash of falling objects was heard before a yelp and loud curses. So, the training grounds were already awake? They wouldnít miss one scrawny Saldaean for a few minutes. Vallaís scar pulled oddly at her yawn; from forehead to jaw the tight angry slash dominated one side of her face. It caused a permanent sardonic smile no matter what her true feelings were, and at the moment that feeling was tiredness.

Squinting open her odd violet eyes she studied her latest acquisition from the yards, a large purpling bruise. It spread across her ribs like a Cook Elnaís Special Jam stain, without even the sweetness of having the jam. She frowned as her fingers delicately walked around the edges, how the bruise had appeared there was unknown. She pressed down gently in the centre probing for the depth of the hurt. Maybe she should get some jam, yes, and a doorstop wedge of bread. After lessons, as a treat of course.

Cat like, Valla arched her back as she stretched and rose from the wonderfully warm and comfortable bunk. As tempting as staying wrapped in the blanket was Valla knew she had to get a wiggle on. The best food for breakfast would be cooking now, ready for those trainees lucky enough to not need the incredibly early sword lesson which would soon be starting. A whole new day for collecting bruises already begun.

Before coming to the Gaidin Valla had believed herself fit. Now, she knew better. As she moved through the familiar motions of her morning routine she discovered aches in muscles the lithe girl had never seemed to have possessed before. She had always been petite and rather lacking on the muscle side, but now even with her short time here her muscle tone was developing and stamina increasing. If only that could happen without the endless hours of training and subsequent pain. Perhaps, that was not the point.

With a sigh Valla picked up the jug of water she had brought in the night before and let the tepid contents cascade into her aged washbowl. It was time to wake up and start acting like an AethaníTar, or better than that, a Gaidar in training. Just as Mother never wanted. Valla grimaced as she plunged her face into the water.

Raking her short dark hair behind her ears, Valla cocked her head as the SeiíTar - Harin, from memory - produced a fist sized leather ball. Her stomach grumbled audibly has he explained the game. Dodge or you are it pretty much summed up the rules. It was a good game choice for Valla, small and quick she was hardly the sort of target most trainees would go for.

"In case you'd lost the incentive to dodge the ball," Harin SeiíTar hefted the ball, aimed and threw quickly. Valla traced the balls flight straight into the arm of some cold trainee in a vest. The heavy blow was enough for Valla to briefly hold her own arm in sympathy. The ball left a large blotch on the arm then landed with hardly a bounce on the ground. The trainee should have moved.

ďSo you see, its worthwhile trying to dodge the ball, it might not look heavy, but it is, and if that hits you . . . well . . . you'll know about it. Oh, yeah, and youíre it!Ē

Without a second thought, Valla ran. One bruise was quite enough, she thought. Plus, if she was caught and got hit hard there was little chance she could throw with quite the same force as the majority of these trainees. What was the point in being it if she couldnít inflict any damage?

Being agile was not enough however, several minutes later caught between large lagging runners and an equally large and tall attacker she had no option but to turn and rush headlong past the trainee with the ball. She was like a hunted fox in the hole, her sudden desperate charge straight toward the attacker seemed to unnerve him for a moment, but he recovered just as Valla believed she was free. The ball thudded into her hip with force, so much so that she staggered back from the impact.

That would hurt later. For now she hefted the leather ball from hand to hand, chose her target and threw. Her triumphant laugh rang clear as she dodged and ran away.
