Birds on the brain
Wed May 24, 2006 02:26 (XFF:

Sweat beaded as it flowed down her forehead, rivulets of the clear liquid running tracks down her flushed cheeks. She blinked as a droplet flowed into her left eye. “I have to do it. I must succeed,” the girl muttered, blanking her mind from the discomfort she was already in. Focus was the key. She shifted slightly, ignoring the discomfort of a soaked dress. Light, even her shift was soaked through with sweat. Focus.

Another drop slid across her right eyelid, hanging for on precarious instant on the long black lashes before making its passage into the pale blue eyes. More blinks followed absently. An itch started down the front of her dress. For a moment, the outstretched hand wavered, shaking slightly before steadying. Focus.

Raps sounded, the sharp sounds piercing through the filter of calm. Celeste ignored the knocks, attempting to keep her focus. Again the raps came, loud and incessant. With a shuddering gasp, the Accepted let her hand drop. Of their own accord, her lungs gasped, drawing deep breaths, as if she had just run miles.

“Enter,” she called between breaths.

The door to her chamber cracked open as a skinny figure slipped in. Airiel took one look at her drenched friend and shook her head, sighing. She knew what Celeste had been up to. The copper skinned Domani walked over to the dresser, lifting the cup of water from its cluttered surface. It was very mildly warm. Airiel handed it to her exhausted friend and waited while Celeste gulped down the water. Her runaway breaths were finally slowing. Celeste glared at Airiel, daring the other Accepted to comment.

“I will succeed.” Celeste muttered again. The water was warm. Warm. She wondered how long it would take for her to gain enough strength with Fire to make herself a cup of hot tea. Outside, the bells within the Tower rang the hour. Airiel handed her a towel for the sweat. There was just enough time to clean up before the next lesson.

Airiel sat and watched in silence as her friend went about making herself presentable for the next lesson. Theirs was the understanding of sisters, of two women who had bonded closely and irrevocably. Despite their outward differences, a firm friendship had been established between the two wilders.

Celeste walked down the corridor rapidly, her boots making a mild clip-clop against the stone floor. She was headed toward the Tower mews for a falconry lesson. Though the notice had not explicitly stated attire, she had taken the liberty to don one of her own sets of clothing, rather than the banded dress. It seemed rather ridiculous to go for such a lesson in a dress and Celeste would rather risk a punishment or censure than forego a chance not to wear that hated dress.

She emerged from the stone portal into the open fields where the mews were situated. The wind immediately gusted, blowing at her midnight blue leggings and top, ruffling them slightly. Her braided hair moved slightly but remained down. It would have been folly to come for this lesson without binding it.

Arranged outside the mews, in a neat row, were several birds of different types seated in individual boxes. Even from this distance, Celeste recognised the Aes Sedai. Demetri Sedai stood before a motley array of students composed of the Gaidin trainees and even a few of those from the Black Tower. Stepping forward, she reported.

“I am Accepted Celeste, Demetri Sedai. I have a passing interest in falconry but have never had any opportunity to take it up before this.”

The Aes Sedai, nodded, handing Celeste a thick leather glove before motioning to the next trainee in line.

OOC:Bleah… lousy post. Somehow just refused to flow… Still, its nice to be back. Took the liberty of ditching the banded dress :p
