It was a short wait for Celeste as Demetri Sedai cleared the last few who had rushed to make it for the lesson. As one of the last to arrive herself, Celeste busied herself studying the glove that sat on her hand. Made of a thick leather, the glove was of a moderate weight and looked sturdy enough to resist the slicing claws of the birds on display.

Absently, the Accepted studied the birds, noting with surprise, the presence of what seemed to be an owl among the other birds. In the background, Demetri Sedai warned her gathered students against some of the elementary dangers of falconry. The warning about her lack of ability to heal brought a faint, wistful smile to Celeste’s lips. It was a mild reminder of her own lack of ability with Fire. Not everyone could do everything it seemed, not even full Aes Sedai.

Celeste drew her attention back to the Sister as Demetri Sedai replaced her bird on its perch, hooding it as she told the students, “I’m going to come around to each of you and show you how to hold your bird. We’ll be working with the falcons first and then the hawks.”

Demetri Sedai moved down the line, helping each student to get his or her bird onto the glove. When it was her turn, Celeste allowed herself to be guided, the shaping and positioning of her hand easily drawing a fair sized falcon to hop onto the glove. Holding tight to the jesses, the Accepted took her time to study the bird.

Finally, the Aes Sedai returned to the front, drawing the attention of her students as she explained the differences within the various species of falcons. The Merlynn, Peregrine, Gyrfalcon, Kestrel and the Prarie. Celeste listened intently, storing the information in her mind. It was interesting to be learning something outside of the Power. So few of her lessons these days had nothing to do with channelling. Once she was done explaining, Demetri Sedai asked each student what species of bird they were holding.

Celeste looked at the falcon perched on her arm. Possessing a back coloured with a nice, light speckled brown. It also had a white underside, streaked with brown and tails and wings banded with white and black. She answered confidently when the Sister gestured at her.

“Merlynn falcon, Aes Sedai.” Demetri Sedai nodded and gestured at the next student.

The next exercise involved training the falcons to come to a command. Celeste watched with interest as Demetri Sedai demonstrated with the falcon on the wrist of Arin, another Accepted. Once she had clearly explained the process, the Aes Sedai started off with the first trainee in line. Celeste watched the people before her go, observing each success and failure. Most of the trainees succeeded on their first try, testament to the excellent job done by the trainers in the mews.

When her turn came, Celeste handed the Merlynn over to Demetri Sedai and waited for the Sister to signal her to begin. Once she was ready, Celeste took a deep breath before following what all those before her had done. Holding up her hands, the Accepted clasped one within the other, leaving a finger to wiggle from the top. “Here!” She called in her silvery voice. The falcon’s head immediately jerked toward her and, with nary a warning sign, the falcon swooped forward and landed easily on the presented glove. The raptor snatched the proferred piece of meat, wolfing it down as it willingly hopped back onto Demetri Sedai’s glove.

Next, Celeste prepared the lure. Taking another breath, she set the weight whirling, gradually widening its arc till the rotation reached the desired width. “Here!” Another sharp command drew the falcon into the air, its swift passage blurring as claws bit into the leather strap, driving the lure into the dusty ground. Celeste walked over, presenting her glove and allowing the bird to hop obediently back on. It wolfed down the remainder meat as both of them waited for the Aes Sedai to start the next segment.
