A Twist

Locke's brow furrowed slightly at the idea that a lesson would involve coddling chicks. It was unexpected and pleasant, the kind of nuturing thing that one would not see at the Black Tower. Fatty shifted idly on his heavy glove as the class walked, adjusting his tawny wings lackadaisically, though Locke wagered that in the bird's head, he was positioning them 'just so'. He was a well behaved bird - the Dedicated had been lucky to have such a calm one - such a well behaved one. Footsteps on grass came to be footsteps on gravel, then a simple path to what could and should be called an aviary. As the door's hinges squeaked and the class meandered in, padded steps sounding heavy in the small space, some of the birds started to complain. I prefer peace and quiet, too. I feel bad, having disturbed them so. Locke studied one of the tempermental ones, making racket, but returned to the task at hand shortly thereafter. Opening the door to his bird's empty cage, he watched the creature hop nonchalantly into the dwelling and onto his perch with nary a hesitation.

The talk that followed was short but informative, and Locke was curious to see one of the Kuyper hawks - they sounded as if they would be dangerous looking creatures in adulthood - he preferred his animals as such, regal and imposing. The babies were not. They were much like human babies, which Locke had a distorted kind of distaste for. They were Obnoxiously loud, ate, cried, and slept - nothing more. The babies of the feathered variety were far more tolerable however, and Locke soon found that having one in his hand, eating ravenously and looking him square in the eye, was more fun than he'd anticipated. The scraps of meat seemed not enough, as his fledgling begged a while before settling down to nap. "That's a good boy - you want sleep, you don't want more food. You'd get fat."

Locke found himself wondering what exactly it would take, as far as labor, to keep a place like this clean. Birds were trainable to a point, but he'd never seen onee using a litterbox. It was possible that three or four people were required to tidy up in here every so often - probably Novices who'd been up to some kind of Novice-esquw nonsense. His thoughs interrupted, Locke came back to class mentally, as they were on the move again.
