The thrill of danger.

Away from the Towers. It wasn’t something that Tsuga had been expecting. The Head Gaidin had approached her a few days ago and told her about a large excursion of Aes Sedai traveling – of all places – to the Borderlands. The Sisters had asked for an escort of Gaidin, and Jield had elected to bring along some of the trainees, as well.

Having been Raised only a couple of months ago, the Sei’Tar considered this opportunity – and that fact that she had been asked to take part in it – nearly priceless. She would be receiving some in-field training, she would get out of the Tower (and Tar Valon itself), and she would get to feel useful. The familiar routine of training within the Tower walls was growing monotonous – wake up, train in the same old places with the same old people in the same old maneuvers until you were exhausted, and go back to sleep, and then start over. She was, undeniably, in a rut.

She had excitedly accepted the Head Gaidin’s offer to join the excursion, and ever since she had been anxiously awaiting this day. Even before dawn’s pale light began to show in the sky, she rose, shivering in the cold air. She made her bed quickly and dressed, relishing the privilege of being able to tuck the dagger marking her rank into her belt. She’d worked hard to earn that knife, and she wasn’t about to go anywhere without it.

Her bedroll and other personal items had been packed for days, but now she double-checked them (for the millionth time, it seemed) to be sure that nothing was forgotten. Each item was laid out on her bed, checked to be sure that it was in proper repair, and only when each thing had been spread out before her and investigated did she begin to repack. She’d done this countless times, and it was becoming second-nature by now to pack the items she was least likely to need first. Her pack was small, and so each item had to be bundled to take up as little space as possible, positioned carefully in the pack so that it allowed the maximum amount of room for the other contents.

Her medical supplies – bandages, a few versatile herbs, and the like – were packed in a side pocket, carefully sealed away against rain and weather, where they would be easily retrieved. She was no fool, to think she would not be needing those on this trip.

Finally, she was satisfied with her provisions, and after pulling on her sturdiest and most comfortable boots and buckling on a plain but warm (and somewhat weatherproof) cloak, she swung the pack over a shoulder and left her room. She still had to eat before they left.

“Welcome, Aethan’Tar, Sei’Tar, and Gaidin. These next few days promise to be an exciting change to the training of the Training Grounds and I’ve very pleased that you’ve all come. Before we begin however, I want you to line up in a single file line and tell Zekian Gaidin your name, so that we know you’re all here. We’ll also be able to see if any of you who aren’t supposed to be here are here.”

Far from the first arrival, she still had not been one of the stragglers, arriving just before they began. She had the leisure to dawdle for several minutes before Jield spoke up, and when the recital of names reached her, she reported her presence and then began looking around, seeking familiar faces. She wanted to know who she would be working with on this journey, in who’s hands her life would rest, and who’s lives would rest in hers. The Borderlands were a dangerous place, after all – being raised on the fringes of them had done nothing to lessen her fear of what lay out there, but at the same time, it was a fear that had been born and bred into her bones. Countless generations of always being on guard against unknown evils and watching their backs against even each other had bred a healthy caution of one’s surroundings into the bones of every Borderlander, and Tsuga was no exception.

The thrill of terror along her spine caused her adrenaline to pump in anticipation, and she couldn’t stop herself from fidgeting. She’d spent so many years in the sheltered environment of the Tower that she had begun to doubt her own ability to survive outside it. This would be a test of everything she had learned thus far, as well as a lesson in which she learned things she had never even thought of before. She just hoped that she wasn’t the first one that got hurt doing something stupid.

OOC: Figured I'd leave her an excuse to screw up or something. Haha.
