Sergey gave the fabric a flourish and Kat felt her stomach churn as her eyes tried following the fancloth. "Stop that." She said, the snap in her voice weak as Kat felt her stomach protest with each twist and turn. "You're making me ill."

"Well, stop looking then." His smug expression faded nearly immediately, however and he settled onto the bench opposite her. "I hear that Jield is going to be sending us all out on a field trip to the Borderlands."

She noticed that he watched her carefully but Kat shrugged it aside. "That's the rumor. An expedition to learn 'useful' survival skills and do some training. I've heard whispers as they come across that Aes Sedai are attending as well."

"Where did you hear that?" Sergey's voice was casual but she noticed a hint of curiosity in it.

Barking a laugh, "I have no idea, it was just being rumored around everyone who's going. All it takes is one Novice who's in the know and has a relationship with an Aethan'Tar, and the rumor will begin." She glanced to the newly raised Gaidin with an arched brow. "I take it there's substance to the rumor?"

"If I told you I wasn't at liberty to say, that would tell you yes, if I told you to not believe all rumors, it would sound like a maybe, and if I told you no, outright, it would imply that I know for certain, yes or no." His mouth curved into a smile. "I'm not at liberty to discuss that."

Kat laughed and shook her head, rising from the bench and tying off the laces of her boots with a final snap. "Well, regardless of Aes Sedai presence or not, I have to get ready, Gaidin, so by your leave…?"

"Of course, Sei'Tar. You're excused." Sergey's easy smile belied the brevity of his dismissal and so she gave a flip bow of respect to him before heading out and finding what she'd need for the Borderlands.

The fact that they were expected to pack as well as they could for a trip to the Borderlands without any indication of where they would be staying caused some concern for the Sei'Tar. If it were a simple survival and training mission, Kat would have assumed that they'd stick to the southern portions of the Borderlands. That meant cloaks of heavy wool and not oiled leather cloaks lined in fur, it meant only two layers of clothing to travel the cold regions of the north and not four light and airy layers. For her to learn survival in the Borderlands was akin to teaching a fish to swim—it was something she had learned as soon as she was old enough to walk.

But if Aes Sedai were going to be going as it was possibly rumored, that meant that they'd be even further north—in the cities that came close to the Mountains of Dhoom. It meant the surrounding areas where it often became so cold in the winter that trees exploded because of the sap. She wondered how much Jield Gaidin was telling them—if leaving out the part about the Aes Sedai was intentional, or if he had been the one to start the rumor to see who could extrapolate what it would mean and how they should prepare.

In any event, the rumor was there and Kat preferred to pack for the region that she assumed that they would head into. If it turned out that she packed too warmly, she could simply add layers and discard with the heavy cloak—no, she could still pack a medium weight cape to protect her against the wind as well as the heavy cloak.

For the rest of the afternoon, Kat worked through what she felt she needed if she were in the Borderlands in terms of clothing. A nice dress that she rolled tightly to avoid wrinkles in the manner the Queen's Guard always packed their clothes, clothing prepared for spending time in the cold atmosphere of the Borderlands for this time of year, she even stopped by the Quartermaster and picked up a packet of rations just in case. Light, but she never knew if it would come in handy. Survival meant being prepared so she also had a small kit for if she was injured and a small flask of brandy. It was overkill, she knew, but she had to prepare as if she didn't know that an Aes Sedai was there for Healing if necessary, while still preparing to go places that Aes Sedai would go in the Borderlands. What a beautiful razor's edge she walked.

The following morning Sergey caught up to her and glanced at her pack. It was bulky enough to give away that she'd over-prepared, but it was still light and mobile enough that her slender frame could easily carry it long distances. The heaviest thing was the dress that she'd packed just in case.

She was dressed to head into the Borderlands with two layers of light clothing and her medium weight cape—the entire "ensemble" was in muted browns and grays and provided enough layers that she wouldn't be cold even during this time of the year for the Borderlands. Slanted across her hips were the two swords that she'd been provided upon mastering the two bladed style of fighting from Talocan Gaidin, another measure of her preparedness. It was to those that Sergey glanced at. "Expecting trouble?"

She cast him an annoyed look at the glib question. "You know as well as I do that each of us should be armed, no matter what. We're Borderlanders, you and I, and to go into that territory with the happy notion that nothing untoward will happen is naïve." Shaking her head, Kat realized the brisk behavior of her commanding years at the Queens Guard was showing. "I'd rather be prepared and have nothing happen, than have something happen and not be ready for it. I don't think that Jield would ever lead us into that situation though, so I'm coming unnecessarily prepared."

The Gaidin gave a soft chuckle and patted her on the shoulder before murmuring an excuse and trotting forward to meet up with others also wearing their fancloths.

The group had begun to gather in the misty morning, the segregation between ranks evident—and despite the rumors, Kat was surprised to see ageless faces peering out from the cowls of cloaks, some of them stood close to men and women in fancloths, but the majority stood off to the side as if they weren't bonded. Among those faces, she was looking for Demetri Sedai, but of her there was no evidence. Her Warder, Daigonyt Gaidin, was there, standing next to a tall and somewhat plain Aes Sedai with stringy brown hair and dull brown eyes. The Warder offered her a morning greeting as she passed and took a place among some of the other Sei'Tar who stood around offering ideas as to what they were going to be doing while in the Borderlands.

"I hear we're going to hunt Trollocs in the Blight."

"Don't be stupid, we wouldn't go into the Blight, that's reserved for when we're about to be raised."

"Now who's being stupid? That was in the old days, Gerrel. We're going to go out and get bonded by Aes Sedai, that's why there's so many without Warders. Mass bonding."

"Are you serious? Mass bonding? I've never heard anything so ridiculous. I heard that we're going to go to Shol Arbela and learn how to fight Shadowspawn from the army up there."

Kat listened with interest to each of the rumors regarding the trip and wondered how they originated. She also wondered what the true purpose was to the exercise. What sort of big design did the Gaidin have for them and why all the secrecy around what was going to happen? From hunting Trollocs in the Blight and mass bonding opportunities for the Aes Sedai, she could believe that the seed of truth lay at the heart of the rumors was the true purpose. It had to be some sort of test for them so that the Head Gaidin could make some sort of decision.

“Welcome, Aethan’Tar, Sei’Tar, and Gaidin. These next few days promise to be an exciting change to the training of the Training Grounds and I’ve very pleased that you’ve all come. Before we begin however, I want you to line up in a single file line and tell Zekian Gaidin your name, so that we know you’re all here. We’ll also be able to see if any of you who aren’t supposed to be here are here.” The Head Gaidin's voice rang out in the Traveling Yards and following that was a slow murmur of people lining up to give their names to the Gaidin.

The turnout was somewhat hefty and she waited a couple minutes before it was even her turn to stand before Zekian Gaidin. With a short bow, Kat announced, "Ekaterine Tenzin Sei'Tar reporting, Zekian Gaidin."

"Ekaterine, Ekaterine…oh here you are. Kat. Yes, thank you, move over to your right near the Aes Sedai and you'll receive your assignment soon enough." And then she was being ushered away from him to stand near a group of men and women—most had the ageless appearance and some looked uncommonly young, but all were Aes Sedai. Kat saw the form of her dual swords mentor, Talocan Gaidin as well, his face withdrawn in thought as he stood near a heavily supplied mount. She caught a glimpse of the stringy haired woman again, her brown eyes scanning the crowd. When her gaze fell on Kat, she gave a short bow of her head as their eyes met and then was moving away again.

For some reason, Kat wondered if that was significant.
