Readying To Leave

Even though his time in the Training Grounds could be measured in weeks, and he didn’t know many of those around him, he had heard many rumors about an upcoming excursion of sorts while those around him in the Mess spoke of it. It was not like he was purposely trying to listen into their conversation, but one would find it hard not to hear. Also, speaking they way they were, in excited tones, since it sounded like it had been a long time since the last outing and even longer since they had had one that allowed the Aethan’Tar, they were just asking to be overheard. Of course, to try and let them feel like they still had some sense of privacy, Kael did not ask them any questions on the topic, and instead gleaned the information from the others as they explained the specifics.

It didn’t appear that they knew all that much about the expedition, and so for a while, Kael doubted that there was going to be any such trip. However, more information came each day, before finally it was announced that they needed to put their name on a list to be allowed on the excursion. Kael made sure to write in his name as soon as possible, probably the same day he had heard of the list, so that he wouldn’t be left here. He had not been here long, and lacked the training that many of his fellow peers had, but he wanted to get the best from this experience as he could.

Now, he was getting ready for the trip to the Borderlands, which would be not too long from now. He remembered seeing those that were disappointed, which were some of the people he had heard the information from in the first place, last night. In a way, Kael felt bad for them, but it was truly their own fault that they had not put their name on the list in first place. They would just have to stay here, and bide their time until the rest of them came back from the excursion. Of course, Kael still didn’t know what exactly they were going on this trip for, but he chose not to question the motives of the Head Gaidin. He knew what he was doing, and he wouldn’t have brought Sei’Tar, much less Aethan’Tar, along if he didn’t think they could handle it.

He decided that it was probably a good idea for him to make his way towards the Traveling Grounds, where they were supposed to meet before they began their journey. As he made his way there, he noticed the crowd of the others that were already gathering. He was not late, but he couldn’t be called early, either. He saw the Aes Sedai there as well, and some of the reason for the need of the Trainees, and Gaidin, became clearer to him. He paid his due respects to both the Head Gaidin, and the Aes Sedai present.

It wasn’t long after he arrived that the Head Gaidin told them to form a line, to make sure that all those there were supposed to be there. Even though he shouldn’t be, Kael began to feel a bit uneasy, feeling as if maybe he had indeed forgotten to put his name on the list like many had, even though he remembered writing it. Kael took a place in the line, and waited for the Gaidin with the list to come to him. Once the man finally arrived, Kael made a small bow before saying his name, Kael Zesiro, Aethan’Tar.

A sense of worry began to fill him as the Gaidin’s eyes went over the list. Of course, there were probably many names to look through, if the number of horses could be any testament, but his fear began to grow in regards to the doubt of him forgetting to place his name on the list. The Gaidin’s brow seemed to furrow for a moment, as he looked over the list, and the Domani Aethan’Tar’s dread only grew. However, soon enough, the Gaidin found his name on the list, and marked him off. As the Gaidin moved on, Kael breathed a sigh of relief, only then noticing that he had held his breath. The sad part was, he had probably only been holding his breath for a short time, since it hadn’t even taken a minute for the Gaidin to find his name, even though it had felt much longer as he stood there waiting. He noticed that a few of the others there seemed to have been filled with the same dread, but in the end, their name was on the list, and they had nothing to fear in the first place.

The Gaidin continued on his way, and he didn’t see one person get sent back, because they had not been on the list. That was probably a good thing; that no one was trying to sneak onto the trip. Of course, they probably feared a reprimand when they got back if they were caught trying to deceive the Head Gaidin. As the Gaidin came to the end of the line, after a few stragglers had got in just before he was there, Kael waited for what was to happen next. Sure, he had seen people leave through the Traveling Grounds before, but he had never done so himself.

He looked around a bit, wondering if they were going to be riding to their destinations, or using the shortcut known as a ‘Gateway’ that the Aes Sedai were able to make. He assumed that they would be using the Gateway, but he wasn’t quite sure. Of course, he didn’t know exactly how far it was to the Borderlands, but he didn’t think that it would be plausible to ride the whole way. Also, he had never been to the Borderlands, but he had heard of them, and to say he was excited wasn’t half of it.
