Hello Malcolm
The word "Proof" in a gold "stamp" suggests de proofmarking of the British firm of Robert Mole, (very very) roughly from 1860-1890. Various forms of this proofmarking can be found in the book on Navy arms by May & Annis, Vol.II page 338. If you give me your mail-adress I will send you a scan of this page for comparison

    hi i have an old sword and on has the letter N stamped on it,and theres a gold rownd mark and in it theres the name proof have you eny info on it and how old it is
