I understand the dilemma. I wonder if a hybrid approach might work. Having him at home with pet care coming in 3 days a week and leaving him with family two days a week? Is that an option?

If not, I think I would prefer he be used to his "normal" schedule right from the beginning.

As far as crate training goes, the rule of thumb is he can be crated for one hour longer than he is old in months. So if he 2 months old = 3 hours max in crate at a time; .3 months old = 4 hours max in crate, etc. Overnight is the exception.
