Yes, Ronelle, I too am dubious as to the value of shrinks, faith healers, therapists of all kinds but the physical; and I may as well throw the so-called political pundits who dominate the airwaves these days; TV news especially.

I like John Douglas, flaws and all. His track record is impressive. That he's not an intellectual (or "intellectual", if you will) is a point in his favor, as I see it. His gut instincts and his pursuit of them caught an awful lot of dangerous criminals.

To move away from Douglas: one can get silly with instincts, too. That there appears to be some evidence that John Condon may have had pedophile tendencies when he was a much younger man could have been dragged into the case as yet another reason for what attraction that CAL, Jr. held for him.

As to Schoenfeld, I read his book ages ago, like maybe 25 years, and while much of it was a slog his take on the likely nature of the kidnapper was remarkably spot on as to Hauptmann: northern European (okay, duh!); bearing a fleeting resemblance to Lindbergh (a little), and similarly introverted; having spent time in an institution.

It was almost uncanny, psychic, at near the level of Billy Mitchell's senate testimony regarding the need for more air power back in the Twenties and his remark on how on some fine Sunday morning there could be a sneak air attack on Pearl Harbor and we won't be prepared. This, some fifteen years before the event!

Even Michael Melsky has acknowledged that Schoenfeld seemed to hit upon something in his "profile" of the kidnapper, prior to Hauptmann's arrest. But these things happen now and again to many of us: we get on a roll. I've even heard this in the speech of schizophrenics, who sometimes show amazing insight and understanding,--only to then go and ruin it all when they say they heard it all from little green men...

Thanks for responding, Ronelle,

John
