witnesses to a railroading

Don't know if Lindy can be blamed for Wilentz' use of Hochmuth and Whited. Schwarzkopf let Lindy run the investigation in the early stages, but by the time of the trial the ball was in Wilentz' court. I'm not a lawyer, but I don't think a witness (Lindy in this case) can accept or refuse the testimony of other witnesses..

Lindy reversed himself on the identification of Hauptmann. Reilly should have hit hard on that, but he was too busy chasing down silly accounts of Violet Sharpe on the Yonkers ferry holding a child, meanwhile deferring to Lindy's public standing.

Jafsie Condon also reversed himself on Hauptmann's ID. Again, Reilly didn't try to impeach his credibility. For me, Jafsie's comment to FBI Agent Turrou, "My life wouldn't be worth five cents (if I identified Hauptmann)" proves that Jafsie knew the mob was behind the kidnapping. Once Wilentz prosecuted Hauptmann as a lone kidnapper, Jafsie's fears evanesced. Only then did he declare with gusto, "Cemetery John is Bruno Richard Hauptmann!" (cue the cymbals and trumpets).

Richard, do you actually view the connection between the ransom note writing and Hauptmann's writing as something requiring a QDE to tell you? Those experts at the trial were not the only ones who... more

Despite the charlatans, I do strongly believe Bruno wrote all the notes (but Im still puzzled over the first one; it doesnt seem to look at all like his writing to me. Could that not also be the... more
