Richard, there is in fact, far less to connect Baker (real name Bacon) and Ellerson, than Bob has asserted here. I'm not stating they did not know each other, but what we have to date, is a lack of verifiable source information to even suggest they did. For example, I'm not sure where the connection between them through the Armour Meat Packing Co. originated, but according to the Bureau of Investigation, in a report by Agent H.C. Leslie, dated 1934-07-24, neither Baker or Ellerson was on record as having worked at Armour, according to the New York office. A number of long term Armour employees were also canvassed and none had heard of either individual. There was an undeveloped lead to see if the Chicago office might be able to cast some further light, but I've never seen a follow up to that. It should also be noted that less than two months later, Hauptmann was arrested and quickly targeted as a lone wolf, so it seems feasible that particular lead might have gone unresolved.

Bob, as you're probably aware, some caution should always be exercised around the FBI files, which were often augmented with unverified information and newspaper accounts. Many holes were also filled ... more

Joe, I might have ascribed to Milton information that appeared elsewhere. If so, I'll have to concede your point. I'm positive that both Baker and Ellerson were cited by an authoritative source as... more
