SUch observations only serve to confuse us and clutter our minds and our research. Of course, every lead must be followed, but they are all in vain and wind up being a waste of time. There are so many people who look like so many people. We are all "types," you know. And we all have twins. I see it all the time. (Once as a teenager, while riding in a bus, I saw my own twin walking down the sidewalk.) I always observe people. I am great with faces, lousy with names. I am always saying to my wife,"He [or she] looks exactly like so and so." She agrees with me only once out of 100 times. G-r-r-r. Once, at a cocktail party before a sit down dinner, I told her "that guy over there looks just like Chuck Scarborough, a local NYC TV anchorman. She said "no way, Jose." As luck would have it, we later found ourselves seated with him at the same dinner table. I asked him, "Did anyone ever tell you that you ...." and before I could finish, he said with a smile, "I look like Chuck Scarborough; yeah; I get that all the time." (No, it wasn't really Chuck!) I gave my wife the elbow. Yet she still didn't see the uncanny resemblance.
Now I'm going to put on my Rod Serling voice to tell you this story: --One late winter afternoon many years ago I was videotaping the scene at St. Raymond's where the ransom was paid. I had an idea about making an ameteur documentary about the case (but I never completed it.)There was no snow on the ground. It was getting dark early, just the way I wanted it to. I deliberately wanted my video to look as dark as possible yet still have the scene recognizable. I was shooting from inside, walking among the graves, at that historic spot. In a few minutes a cemetery worker came driving down Whittemore Avenue in a pickup truck, got out and told me that he had to lock the gate and I'd have to get out. (That was OK with me; I still had shots to take from outside, on Whittemore.) He looked very familiar to me, but as I said, so many people look familiar to me, so I didnt give it a thought. I quickly walked out to Whittemore. He locked up. We bid each other goodnite, and he drove away. It was all done quickly; too quickly, darn it. (Sneak in the harpsichord music here!) You see, I suddenly realized why the man had looked familiar to me; he was the spitting image of Jafsie Condon! It blew my mind. I immediately got into my car and gave chase. I had to take his picture. But there was no sign of the truck, or of him. It's as though he had just disappeared. I know what I saw. Nobody can tell me he wasn't Jafsie's twin. Was it my imagination? Or had I entered... the Twilight Zone????? (Cue the harpsichord sting.)
