You're entirely right that Lindy didn't know how to handle the media, Sue. But I'd suggest that if he had taken off from Pittsburgh or Baltimore instead of Long Island in May 1927, his life would have been entirely different and the Eaglet might be alive today at the ripe age of 87.

At the risk of offending my friends from the New York area, let me opine that the Big Apple media are in a class by themselves when it comes to driving sane people nuts. Wasn't it Cassidy from the Daily News who wrote Condon's phone number on the wall at Hauptmann's apartment? Wasn't it a Daily News reporter who bragged that "We made Lindy who he is," as if flying the Atlantic wasn't enough? Suffice it to say that Lindy and Roger Maris are not the only two public figures who have loathed the New York media.

If you've often read that Hauptmann had "no personality," consider where he lived and who was judging him. And consider further that in the pre-TV, pre-Twitter era, newspapers had a disproportionate influence on public opinion. Now consider further that Hauptmann was a German national, living in a city with a large Jewish population while Hitler was taking over Europe, and ask yourself, "What chance did he have to appear human?" I don't think it was the world's standards that deprived Hauptmann of a personality, it was NEW YORK'S standards.

Did you bring up this idea that the New York media might have been responsible for the baby's death in your book, The Lindbergh Syndrome? You may be on to something when you say the baby may have... more

I do think New York is at once resented and envied, Sue. I believe people consider it as a municipal standard bearer because New York considers itself a standard media, finance, theater,... more
