Bruno and a lawyer

Re: "newspaper accts say that Hauptmann at the start did not want a lawyer." What is the source for the initial report that the papers all repeated? It can only be treated as "hearsay" with out that. A reason given (was it by Bob?) as to why he wouldn't want a lawyer is a mixture of common sense and overboard speculation, in my opinion. I agree with you Bob that he was afraid of the gang, for his family's sake. I don'think he was a lone wolf. I once speculated myself -- that he might have had a dual personality, but I can't find anything to bolster it. Could he have been the lone wolf and very shrewd? He seemed to smiley when he was photographed in court with Reilly. That smile always bothered me. Was he just trying to look innocent? Was he acting? Or was he just stupid to reaize that he was doomed.
