the booth myth

In Caroline County, Virginia, many locals still believe Booth escaped and that the man with Herold at Garrett's Farm was a Confederate named J.W. Boyd. I agree with you that it's a myth, Richard.

Upon the return of his body to Washington, a doctor who had earlier removed a growth from Booth's neck predicted (before seeing the body) that a scar from the surgery would be evident. The scar was exactly where the doctor predicted. When the body was later turned over to the Booth family, several relatives affirmed that it was Wilkes Booth. But the hoax proved profitable; a mummified corpse purporting to be Booth attracted paying crowds for years throughout the Midwest.
