Great find Sue. Thank you.

Nine dictionaries were found in Hauptmann's apartment. It certainly lends credence to the Wilentz statement that Hauptmann was a dictionary student or at least had a dictionary fetish.

Joe, don't we all have nine dictionaries in our homes? I have two that I bought over a twenty year period. I guess that makes me small potatoes when it comes to dictionaries.

Bob, why and how are the police going to plant nine dictionaries on purpose in Hauptmann's trunk. At the time they found them they didn't know the significance or non-significance of finding nine dictionaries. Why nine? Why not eight or ten. I guess the number nine sounds better when you are trying to fabricate evidence against a suspect.

Fabricating dictionary evidence against Hauptmann is not as easy as it first sounds.

Where are you going to find nine German-English dictionaries of different copyright dates and probably different publishers? It isn't rational to think Hauptmann bought the very same dictionary, with the very same copyright date, and from the very same publisher nine times in a row.

Where are the police going to find nine German-English dictionaries with differing copyright dates and publishers in 1934? This couldn't be done. Hauptmann sneaked into the United States in 1923 and was arrested in 1934. This is the time span of the copyright dates the nine dictionaries should exhibit. If they do not and they are all the same, now a person can cry "railroaded" and have the proof of that railroading.

In a case overflowing with planted evidence, this looks like a crude effort by someone to prove something against Hauptmann. NINE German-English dictionaries? NINE? Who needs that many dictionaries?
