nine dictionaries
Thu Mar 1, 2018 18:07

I don't want to repeat myself. i agree that it makes little or no sense that the cops would plant extra bi-lingual dictionaries in Hauptmann's apartment.

It makes even less sense (to me) that a man so meticulous as to surround himself with nine German-English dictionaries, wouldn't at the same time know how to spell the word "money." Hauptmann had been in the United States for 10 years, he's a dictionary freak, and he still spent "money" as "mony?" That's beyond rational belief.

Was he trying to fool the authorities? Was "mony" an effort to deceive? That's pretty clever. But would this same clever individual incriminate himself by using a board from his landlady's attic to build a ladder, knowing it could be traced back t to him, when he could have bought the same board wholesale at a nearby lumber yard? Would this same clever guy have wandered around the Bronx for 2-1/2 years, undisguised, if he had been Cemetery John?

Either Hauptmann was a clever deceiver, or he was a bumbling idiot. He could not have been both at the same time. Can we decide one way or the other what he was?

Joe, it is certainly possible the dictionaries could be part of a complete set. We could find the answer quickly if we could study the originals. This is interesting. When Wilentz mentioned... more
