I've never found any significant evidence that capital punishment is a deterrent to crime.

Historically, when you look at the number of people that have been executed by hanging, guillotined, firing squad, gas chamber, electrocution, and lethal injection capital punishment certainly doesn't slow murderers down any. There is someone being murdered somewhere right now as I type this message.
