I believe Cemetery John was Isidor Fisch, for the following reasons:

1. Jafsie said C.J. had a "hacking cough." Fisch had tuberculosis. That connects.

2. Hauptmann showed no fear of being apprehended for 2-1/2 years, going out in public without changing his appearance at any time. Every cop on the beat had C.J.'s description, yet Hauptmann was never stopped for questioning once. Impossible. Why couldn't the cops find anyone that fit Jafsie's description of C.J.? Because Fisch had gone to Germany, never to return.

3. Hauptmann's "partnership" with Fisch, supposedly involving fur pellets and stock trading, was probably extortion. Fisch knew Lindbergh ransom money was useless in Germany, so he left his share of the extorted ransom behind when he went there to obtain treatment for the tuberculosis. He died, so Hauptmann kept it all, hoping to spend it slowly enough that he wouldn't be detected.

An alternate possibility is that Hauptmann and Fisch were part of the kidnap gang (it was a gang operation, remember, unless every cop in New York and New Jersey, Lindy himself, and Jafsie were all wrong and only Dudley Schonfeld, who never met anyone involved in the case and analyzed it from his office, was right). The Eaglet died, so the ransom exchange was a non-starter. Duane Baker headed for hills with his share of the ransom, laundering circa $4,000 of it about a year later, using the pseudonym, "J.J. Faulkner." Hauptmann was living off the share allocated to him and Fisch, and possibly additional ransom money he'd bought for pennies on the dollar from other gang members who wanted to get rid of it. Holding any gold certificates beyond $100. worth after FDR called them in was a separate crime from extortion, so the ransom money was "hot" for two reasons.

Very possibly Charles Henry Ellerson was one of that group. Who else knew that the Lindberghs would be spending a Tuesday night at Highfields for the only time, ever? Does anyone really believe that Hauptmann would have driven out there on a weeknight on the off chance that Anne Lindbergh would have decided at the last minute to stay an extra night? How did those dim bulbs on the jury ever imagine that Hauptmann would have had that information?

I think that a good deal of how we view the early part of the case, prior to the child's body being found is, almost of necessity, based in larger part than is wise to assume, on "Condon's version"... more

Have to agree with you Bob that CJ very well was Isador Fisch and because of the reasons you have mentioned here which were spot on I'd say. Everything adds up the way you've stated it but of course, ... more

Thanks, Tanialee. I've been intrigued by the fact that folks here don't view the LKC through Hauptmann's eyes. Was he a bad guy? Sure he was. But did he sacrifice himself? I doubt it. How can we... more

Good points, Bob, and thanks for responding. My issues with Fisch has been with his height, way shorter than what Condon noted for CJ; and his apparently slightly Yiddish inflected German accent,... more
