The weather sharpened; Christmas was in the air.
Some of the strangers in town were saying that because of the crimes's atrocious nature and the veneration in which the dead child's father was held, the Lindbergh case couldn't possibly be trialed on its merits - Richard Hauptmann would never receive a fair trial. Wrong, Flemington replied with a united voice, absolutely wrong! No Hunterdon County jury would prejudge any defendant; Hunterdon County people were fair-minded, you could count on that.
Sounds of young voices floated through the crisp evening. The fair-minded Hunterdon County people's children were chanting carols outside Richard Hauptmann's cell.
