Joe, in the fifth ransom note, reverse side, we have the first mention of the 8 hour waiting period, "after 8 houers we have the money received we will notify you where to find the baby." This was the ransom note included in the package with the sleeping suit on March 16. No way of knowing what was going on in Hauptmann's pea brain. "Notify" could have meant a telephone call.

Yes, the Boad Nelly note was written on a smaller piece of paper and it was probably torn from a full sheet. We would have to examine the original note to know for sure but we would have a positive answer in less than a minute. This would not be the first torn piece of stationery we have encountered in this case.

The Boad Nelly note does not have the signature symbol with the three holes punched in because there was no room for the symbol. On all the other ransom notes with the symbol we can see how the writing is written with its arrangement avoiding the symbols and the holes. It shows us that the symbols and holes were made first and then afterwards the writing took place.

The writing on the Boad Nelly note does not show any indications that the writer was in any kind of awkward writing position or writing with the paper resting on top of some kind of peculiar surface that would introduce distortion in the writing lines. The writing quality compares quite well to the writing quality displayed in the preceding directional ransom note.

Michael, plans change when their weaknesses are realized, and within the planner's buildup to the ransom exchange, this is what appears to have happened. CJ was a very shrewd negotiator. Ransom note... more

Michael, would it be possible to determine if the Boad Nelly note was written on the same type of paper as the rest of the ransom notes?

Yes. By using the same method of comparison used to analyze the Nursery note and the March 4 ransom note.

Do you know if the Boad Nelly note was written on the same writing paper (carried by F.W. Woolworth's) as the rest of the notes? When all is said and done, it seems feasible that Hauptmann could have ... more

In Haring's book (p.75) there is a photograph of the Boad Nelly ransom note. On page (72) there is a photograph of the preceding "cross the street..." directional note. When the two are compared it... more

Michael, over the years, Haring's book is the one I've used to determine some of the dimensions within the ransom notes, ie. distance between punched holes and width / height. With most of the notes, ... more
