Hauptmann's Interests

Thanks for posting. Hauptmann seemed to have eclectic tastes in his reading, and a taste for adventure, of which he had his share, but nothing like Lindbergh's. In his aspirations as a very young man he may well have had dreams of the sort of life that Lindbergh actually lived. Very ambitious young men,--and I was one of them--often crave things beyond their reach. In this, Hauptmann was, when young, typical of his age group. I see nothing in this to suggest that the next step would be for him to kidnap, much less kill, the young child of a man who had achieved his lofty goals, as Hauptmann had not. The case against Hauptmann that David Wilentz made struck me as in this a series of cheap shots.
