Notes for Aaron Van Cleave:
Aaron and his brother Benjamin were in business together in New Brunswick, New Jersey, between 1748 and 1750.
Ledley quotes another writer for the story that Aaron went on a bond for a friend and then had to pay when the friend
could not. Because of his loss he moved in May of 1750 with his wife, seven sons and one daughter to Mocksville in
Rowan County, North Carolina. On Feburary 21, 1764 Aaron bought a farm from Daniel and Rebecca Boone. He
was among the persons participating in the Meckleburg Convention of 1775, which met as an aftermath of the
6 March 24, 2004
skirmishes a Lexington and Concord and which drew up resolutions that included the statement, "The political bands
which connected us to the Mother Country are dissolved." The authenticity of this Mecklenburg Convention and its
"Declaration of Independence" has been questioned. His sons were to be pioneers in Kentucky around 1779 (Daniel
Boone established Boonesboro there in 1775). His daughter Jane married Squire Boone, Jr., Daniel's brother. Aaron
died in Rowan County in 1780. His body and that of his wife Rachel are buried in Joppa Cemetery in Salisbury,
North Carolina.

Montgomery Township Bicentenial Committee, 1972 page 42:
The southern half of the Harlingen Tract was occupied even earlier. The tombstone of Lambert Dorland, who died
about 1720, is now gone, but a commemorative tablet marks the place on a farm north of Sunset Road. Dorland's
sons spread out over the southernmost tracts--Lots 11, 12, & 13. When the second-generation Lambert died in 1772,
his prosperity had declined and his son John renounced his inheritence in order to pay his father's creditors. At one
time practically all of Lot 12 (which fell on both sides of Sunset Road) belonged to Garrit Dorland, but his neighbor
on the east, Cornelius Ten Broeck later possessed it.
