is not my favorite actor as I may have mentioned before. And I know he did go on bitching about Leone movies. But no wonder Lee and Eli Wallach stole the show, I always percieve Clints performance as as flat as his voice. I know he is appealing to some because his characters are cool, in control and not very involved in what is going on, but to me they lack the human touch even Angel Eyes has - not to mention Tuco who is depicted as a very spontaneous and emotional creature. No wonder they attract all the attention. Even the supporting actors are more interesting, think of Klaus Kinski or Luigi Pistilli. If they had had more screen time, they would also have stolen the show. Mentioning Kinski: Has anybody of you ever watched Fitzcarraldo or his version of Nosferatu? They are brilliant.

That said, it works even less for John Philipp Law in Death Rides a Horse, and I spend quite a lot of time ignoring him whenever I watch the movie. But - same as you DCG came to terms with Crazy Tony - I don't mind the wooden character any more.

Interesting point about the RD/SD change you mentioned, I will keep that in mind next time around. I think the taciturn characters taking their time and the subtle changes in expression really are his USP (and of course he looks soooo attractive, did I ever mention that? ;) ).
