Grit and dirt...

... and desolation rather than heroes in the Civil War - at least in GBU. And you also get the diversity you probably had in the West, remember the Czech guy in Beyond the Law? I think I never saw any Czech people in any US Westerns. So you get a totally different set of stereotypes in Italian Westerns and a totally different outlook on life. I also always was fascinated by the fact that there are no good guys with white hats on white horses...

I read somewhere that Eli Wallach was told just to fool around and improvise in any way that pleased him in the movie, and he really made a great job of it. Kinski has more than one beautiful daughter, but at least Pola did not write very many nice things about him. Did you ever watch Fitzcarraldo? The natives on the set offered to kill him as he was driving anybody nuts, but the director Werner Herzog refused, they had a kind of love and hate relationship, but a very productive one which resulted in fascinating movies.

By the way, another actor who turned up in FFDM and who is a real asset in many Italian Westerns is Luigi Pistilli.

Yes, I do live in Europe and that also explains why I sometimes post in what might look to you like the middle of the night. ;) I've never been to Pennsylvania, but I have seen pictures and it looks beautiful, especially in autumn!

Aaron has got one, it can be seen on some of his pictures taken in Spain. You are right, it is amazing that people still sell (and buy) all these mementos years after the move was made. Oh yes, Mr.... more
