Yes, I imagine from the timing of it, that Gates probably did it initially to try to recover the reputation of Microsoft, but it seems to have become more than that for him as he grew older and became a father. I don't think the existence of that kind of wealth is healthy for the world, but I do think he and his wife are sincerely trying to improve the health of children around the world these days through the vaccination programs. Maybe too little, too late, but the potential seems to be there. I have some personal qualms about some of his educational theories, but so it goes.
Politics is sort of a special case. Even the powerful seem to lack power, when it comes to politics. Politicians are too dependent on those who put them into power, and who can also remove them. Gates didn't have to worry about that.
