The hierarchy spends too much time maintaining itself and the actual message of the avatar is lost. I remember reading that Christianity has become a vertical religion--bent upon keeping itself in power and searching for God upward and outward. For the writer (i wish I could remember this guy's name) real Christianity was best manifest horizontally. To serve the Christian God one needs to look left and right, not up. God is truly most accurately depicted in your neighbors, not up and not with the help of a hierarchy. I like that.
