BaruchYes, Gnosticism aka Kabbalah ...Thu Apr 26, 2012 06:4467.67.14.81goes back to the Wisdom literature of Egypt and Mesopotamia (not counting imports from Persia and India). The Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Mary clearly show the raw material and process that was in place before the Gospels were written. Religious creativity operates with a common process present in all advanced cultures ... first there are individual oracles, then there are stories about the giver of oracles, and then the two are put together into a narrative. This is a way of fossilizing the original experience of sitting at the feet of the roshi/saddhu/prophet/sage.
For most people who never get that original experience, what is important is the living tradition (Zeus doesn't have one), not history (unless you accept that history isn't factual, just propaganda, as it was for the father of History, Herodotus).
