Fielder says---Christianity arose during a tie of remarkable cultural and intellectual fusion which has been unparalleled in the history of hte West, at least up until the present time. Christianity originated in the Hellenistic age when the streams of Greek, Judaic, Egyptian and Eastern cultures flowed together to created powerful new social, spiritual and philosophical syntheses.
The key word being 'syntheses'. In this particular atmosphere, one particular oracle was not needed to help further a group's aims or ideals. At this time, there were a myriad of teachings to chose from and one could just as easily pick and chose to craft one's aim or purpose. Jesus did not need to be historical to have a powerful presence and voice.
