could be benefits to anything. So, what? Yes, torture has been used and will continue to be used forever. So what? No, torture was not useless according to my teachers and those that worked in the field. But it was not dependable or should I say it had the lowest dependable rating one could give in this area. All intel developed by any means has to be verified to be of real value. Tortured people have a tendency to tell you what you want to hear (they have a real Romey trait here--tell that particular audience that day what they want to hear.)--I mean if I were captured and tortured, I'd do everything I could, including inventing the best story I could come up with just to get it to stop. is torture always unproductive? Of course not. Nothing is ever totally bad or good. As a rule, when I was in Mil. Intell. it was sop not to use it because it was considered useless or detrimental to the mission of the US Army. And I would be willing to bet you if you know anybody still in the intel business that they would continue to tell you the same thing today.

Spanking--once again nothing is ever totally wrong or useless. But spanking is much like torture. In my experience it does not work, except maybe in a short term manner, at times. "I told you not to go into the street with your bike!" Wack! I did that. Once. The next day I apologized to my daughter for hitting her. But I told her I'd do it again if it was for her safety. I never had to do so, luckily. Spanking is too often used because it is the easiest thing to do. It teaches, whether or not we want it to, that might makes right. In the long run that isn't a particularly good message to pass along. As a teacher in a juvenile hall setting for 39 years, I did not see corporal punishment as a cure for anything. Spanking would not have kept one person out of juvenile hall. (Alright, Sai, maybe one--but if I was pressed to pick that 'one' out I'd not have a clue as to which one it would have worked for.) For me raising a child requires discipline. And it must be consistent and clear. When issuing edicts, the results of the child's choice should be evident to that child. They must be able to see what the consequences, good and bad, would be. And if they make a bad choice then the consequences much be carried out swiftly. The same for good choices--swift and consistent--that must be the mantra. In my experience spanking produces fear and resentment, not respect.
