The Germans only party ...

at Oktoberfest ... and only in S Germany. Those Prussians are a dour bunch of party poopers ;-( Notice all the unintended?? allusions you imply. German immigrants went both to the US and to Mexico in the 19th century. Mexican beer came about because of S German immigrants, as is the um-pa-pa and accordian music of N Mexico. Cinco De Mayo is mostly a Mexican-American holiday ... actual Mexicans don't celebrate it much, they remember that the French troops were initially taken by surprise, but French defeated the Mexicans the following day ... it was a very temporary victory for Mexico ... against hardened Foreign Legion troops. And they remember they had already been badly defeated by the US a few years earlier before the French even arrived, so they were in a weakened state, and were usually blessed with poor leadership. They probably also remember that it was the Americans post-Civil War, who threatened the French position in Mexico (per Monroe Doctrine), forcing the French to withdraw from what the Americans considered their "protectorate", otherwise they might still be there. France was merely trying to regain a New World empire after losing their first one in Canada.
