The myth of the objective gatekeeper is, of course, tommy-rot as FOXNews has made abundantly clear. Of course, it was never truly accurate but there was a time when some reporters and editors strove for a little bit of balance.

This was not in the interest of justice, or even "the public's right to know." It was purely a byproduct of the endless circulation wars and the cut-throat nature of radio and television news. There was, in the back of every journalist, an abiding fear of being scooped by the opposition. So, it never hurt to give the commie-pinko-faggot a chance to air his/her opinion, since the opposition might and there was always a possibility that, public opinion being fickle, that the public might prefer that version of things.

Although I worked in journalism decades after its heyday, there were enough old-timers I spoke to, and I read enough histories of journalism to know that the "corporate mentality" that people decry today was always the center[ice of journalism... as anyone in advertising or circulation will tell you, the editorial copy is merely the stuff that goes in the space they couldn't sell for ads...

And, like RR, I have faked "coverage" based on baseball games stats...
