Individual profession as currently understood didn't happen until the Protestant Reformation. And parents were concerned about children, before first communion, not just infants ... and they had very negative ideas of the fate of such children if not baptized. And of course infant and early childhood mortality was very high, maybe half the children never made it to first communion. Times have changed for the better, and for most, theology has also changed for the better.
