True atheists would be nihilists, would believe in nothing. A minority and unstable position leading to either suicide or some conversion experience to an ideology or theology. Most atheists aren't, they are post-Christians. They still know how to behave in a Christian society, minus the Church activity, and the Church is still there to remind them. But if you fully remove that Church presence thru neglect (Britain) or force (Soviet Union), then people will either treat Stalin as god, or they will reconvert at the first opportunity (Gorbachev). Today, for Putin, Putin worships himself, and accepts Medvedyev as his high priest. So if you close all the churches in Britain, but don't close all the mosques, then when reconversion hits (as after fall of the Soviet Union), then people will grasp whatever institutional religion is at hand, in this case Islam. So yes, I would advise Britain to keep its churches open, and encourage their reuse as community and cultural centers. But will multiculturalism allow that? Not that I really care if post-Olympic London will look more like Victorian Kerachi than like Victorian London.
Maybe this idea of manifest destiny of decline of mere superstition, a dogma of 250 years ago, is just another stupid dogma? Best ignore Voltaire and Rousseau, they are French.
