A lot of the papers were shut down during the Red Scare, though, not so much for being German, as for having socialist cred.

I'm not sure what happened in the USA, but I know that, here in Canada, there was considerable pressure on "Enemy Aliens". Ukranians and Germans were both sent to internment camps; it was a bit iffier for Poles, since most of Poland was Russian. Areas with large German speaking populations, for example the area between Toronto and London in Southern Ontario, were under great pressure to prove their patriotism, even though the "Germans" there had, in some cases, lived in their communities for 150 years (the original inhabitants having been Hessian veterans from the Revolutionary war, Amish, and Mennonites, with a later admixture of German refugees from the potato famine (people forget that hit the Low Countries, German and Poland, too!) and Bismark's Kulturkampf.) A number of Germanic named communities changed their names to seem more "loyal"; Berlin, Ontario, for example, became Kitchener.

Here the government has issued abject "apologies" for all of this, over the past couple of decades, with some cash in a few cases.
