Americans were much more polarized in the 1920s and 1930s then today. The question would be, if one allows Muslim parochial education, will the same thing happen? Education in Australia and GB are different than in the US, so I don't know the history of parochial education there, or how the threat of Catholic immigration was handled in the past.
Free public eduction is still a good idea, but Americans no longer see themselves as one people, as we did two generations ago.
