the human personality, and civilization, is a house of cards. Nervous breakdown or civilization collapse is always possible, and happens from time to time, because the superstructure is just that tenuous. The idea in the first Planet of the Apes movie, that humans could revert to pre-speech, is in fact accurate, if the collapse is sufficiently profound, the pre-speech Stone Age is where we will revert to. With individuals, they end up in a mental asylum, except that only happens if civilization doesn't collapse.
