BaruchDefinitions ...Sat Jul 7, 2012 06:5666.139.155.140Per Physics:
hypothesis = concept developed by the imagination, that is potentially repeatable, quantifiable and confirmable by public observation, Higgs boson for example
theory = hypothesis confirmed by public observation, that is also repeatable and quantifiable, theory of relativity for example
law = theory confirmed by controlled experiment, Ohm's law for example
Per Maths:
axiom = concept developed by the imagination, that is publicly intelligible, but not necessarily quantifiable, a single line can be put thru two points for example
theorem = concept developed by deduction from one or more axioms, that is publicly intelligible
lemma = step in a chain of deduction, in the process of deducing a theorem
postulate = an axiom that is less publicly intelligible than average, the parallel postulate in Euclidean geometry for example
Now none of that applies outside of physical science on the one hand, or mathematics on the other. Quantifiable mathematics is commonly used as a tool in physical science
Assumption = what you say ...
Fact = what I say
are terms from rhetoric and dialectic, not math or physical science.
Reductionism =false hypothesis that everything can be explained thru physical science
Newtonianism = Isaac is god incarnate of math and physics, and British by G-d! Kiss British my ass, you Frogs, Krauts etc
Einstein = G-d's way of humbling the British ;-)
Shalom
