This is from 4 years ago, and now we maybe have a single Higgs particle type from the LHC. In this generic discussion of E8 theory, one version of which could be an E8 superstring theory ... you have a set of symmetries at each point in space-time ... each symmetry is a particle, and some particles in the model are not yet found (these are besides the minimal Higgs, which is predicted by existing theory), so they provide targets for further investigation in the LHC. What has happened at the LHC this past year, is that supersymmetry, which is a part of superstrings (aka string theory) has been mostly ruled out by what was not seen. So if E8 is still a viable theory, those additional particles might still be out there to be found, but it is improbably at this point that string theory can be used to explain them.

What I found most interesting, is that the speaker used a biological analogy (Lee Smolin for instance has been using a Darwinian analogy in physics) to explain multiple-universe theory ... which is also something that comes out of both existing quantum field theory, but is debunked by the post I made a few days ago by the Google guy (also found in this string). However I would go farther, rather than using coral to explain reality, I would use humans to explain reality, at least the human-understandable part of reality, which is by definition the only part of reality we can understand. In short I am full anthropocentric in my metaphysics, not reductionist.

People make up atoms, atoms don't make up people. The idea of atoms, like any other human idea, has a utility, but Plato is wrong in supposing that our ideas describe any absolute reality. It only describes a relative reality, and the other basis of Lee Smolin's argument, is that reality is relational rather than hierarchical (in addition to being evolutionary). This metaphysics is consistent with some forms of Buddhism. Though I differ from Buddhism in being a personalist rather than an impersonalist. Buddhism in contrast to Judaism, is for me too impersonal.

Shalom
