Current experimental physics ...

Well, doesn't directly address what "existence" is ... but short lived particles, even shorter lived resonances, and very short lived victual particles (in QM) ... so say something. Particles like the electron and proton appear to be immortal (base states that can't decay further). Basically, particle physics is a bit like spectroscopy (bound electrons emitting or absorbing photons) but more general. If you put enough energy into a small enough space over a short enough time, you get virtual particles to pop up ... which in most cases are temporary, and they decay into lower energy configurations (entropy wins) ... just as an excited atom can have an energized electron, decay into a base state, emitting a characteristic photon (spectrum). Mass-energy is conserved, even if mass and energy are not independently conserved. Also space-time seems to be conserved at least over small volumes of space and humanly short periods of time (but not in the larger picture of galaxies and the universe as a whole). There are two theoretical violations of mass-energy conservation ... gravity waves (which may have been detected last Fall) and the Big Bang itself. Not so much that things are always conserved, but under what common or rare circumstances are the rules violated. More detail:

It is as lonely here as a Maytag repairman commercial ;-) As per a recent debate against Hawking and Tyson, philosophical concepts are passe and not cool. Scientists speculate, in addition to doing... more
