There are two attitudes of theism ...

1. I want to cajole G-d to think like me, so that G-d is on my side

2. I want to cajole myself to think like G-d, so that I am on G-d's side

That makes two kinds of prayer. Is prayer to inform G-d? G-d already knows what you need. Is prayer to petition G-d? That falls under attitude #1. Is prayer to ask for the grace to think like and act like G-d? That falls under attitude #2.

If we pray to repent, and repent so that we are purified to act like G-d, then that coms from attitude #2. The first is arrogance.

So much of synagogue, church and mosque come from attitude #1. The attitude that I am #1, not G-d.

Seems pretty much the same as #2. Though it implies arrogantly, that we know G-d's will for us.
