The owners of more than 350 confiscated dogs have been charged with a felony
George and Cheri Burke, each 64, were both charged with animal abandonment/animal cruelty to 10 or more animals, a felony punishable by up to four years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines and 500 hours of community service.
More than 350 dogs were confiscated Monday from the couple's 104th Avenue home in Cheshire Township in Allegan County.
The Allegan County Animal Shelter was flooded with the animals, mainly Shih Tzus, in what one volunteer called a "sea of dogs." The animals were confiscated from a breeder's home and barn in Cheshire Township earlier in the day.
Besides the fleas and feces, the animals had eye issues and many were pregnant.
"Our biggest concern was the care of the animals and conditions in which they were housed," said Allegan County Sheriff's Office Lt. Frank Baker.
Both requested a court appointed attorney. Each is being held on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.
