I gained 30# in the first 3 months and ended up on Pred. for 5.5 years. Early on the mood swings and depression over wt.gain were as bad as the jittery, sleeplesness and other sx. As a nursing instructor I attended a CE course on diabetic mgt. Later recalled pred. known to cause blood sugar swings so decided to use one of the recommended food plans for maintaining even blood glucose levels. I studied "The Zone", G.I. and South Beach (there are many similarities) and came to believe it was worth the effort to practice carb. management.

I lost wt. while still on pred but it was very slow. First goal is to stabalize and not gain more--then it was often as slow as 1#/mo of conscientious dieting.(Not fun)--bonus was to feel better and have fewer side effects. One has to reframe expectations to see success as maintaining and celebrate even small improvement. Even though I struggled at times and felt "deprived" the act of taking bold steps to try to improve heath and appearance reduced the sense of being a victim of Stills. I had to reduce pred. extreemly slowly-took 18mo to get from 7.5mg. to 0 but now off 2yrs

My dr.is a med school Rheum. prof and was impressed by my success and endorsed the theory. Not easy but worth it--I now have a life time of improved eating habits with treats occasionally. Best wishes
