Police: 7 dead in Wisconsin Sikh temple shooting 05 Aug 2012 A gunman opened fire Sunday and killed six people at a Sikh temple near Milwaukee before he was killed in an exchange of gunfire with one of the first officers to respond to the chaotic scene, authorities said. The shootings happened before 10:30 a.m., when witnesses said several dozen people were gathering at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin for a service. Hours of uncertainty followed as police in tactical gear and carrying assault rifles surrounded the temple with armored vehicles and ambulances. A crowd gathered outside as officers descended on the temple and some spoke of talking or exchanging text messages with people inside. Some said they had heard there were multiple shooters, others spoke of women and children held hostage.
Gunman, six others dead at Wisconsin Sikh temple 05 Aug 2012 At least seven people, including a gunman shot by a police officer, have been killed in an attack on worshippers at a Sikh temple in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, on Sunday, police said. The officer was wounded but "returned fire, and that shooter was put down," said Bradley Wentlandt, the police chief in nearby Greenfield, who briefed reporters. Investigators who picked through the building afterward found four bodies inside the temple and two other victims outside, plus the gunman, Wentlandt said. Though early reports had suggested there may have been more than one attacker, he said officers had not identified any other gunmen.

London at Olympic 'war' Games 05 Aug 2012 With the Olympic security map exposed, the question remains whether London seriously intends its full army of personnel and military hardware to secure the Games or a show is in the making. A list of forces and equipment on the ground and in the air is as follows: the Navy’s HMS Bulwark and the force’s largest warship HMS Ocean, Typhoon fighter jets, Apache Helicopters, E-3 Sentinel spy planes, type 101 radars, Rapier missile and radar systems, Star Streak missiles, eagle-eyed surveillance drones, Long-range acoustic device (LRAD) for ear-piercing targeted sound discharges, an 18km electrified security barrier as well as security personnel from the Army, the police, FBI and private security firms who dwarf the whole British military deployment in Afghanistan. Organizers of the Games say the measures that are part of the biggest peace-time military mobilization Britain has ever seen are necessary for the security of the Games.
Thousands of Fish Die as Midwest Streams Heat Up --So many fish died in one Illinois lake that the carcasses clogged an intake screen near a power plant, lowering water levels to the point that the station had to shut down one of its generators. 05 Aug 2012 Thousands of fish are dying in the Midwest as the hot, dry summer dries up rivers and causes water temperatures to climb in some spots to nearly 100 degrees. About 40,000 shovelnose sturgeon were killed in Iowa last week as water temperatures reached 97 degrees. Nebraska fishery officials said they've seen thousands of dead sturgeon, catfish, carp, and other species in the Lower Platte River, including the endangered pallid sturgeon. And biologists in Illinois said the hot weather has killed tens of thousands of large- and smallmouth bass and channel catfish and is threatening the population of the greater redhorse fish, a state-endangered species.
