United to furlough nearly 700 flight attendants

PARIS – A United Airlines flight bound for Chicago was forced to return to its departure city of Paris due to a mechanical issue.

A spokeswoman for the airline says United Airlines flight 986 from Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris to Chicago’s O’Hare airport carrying 177 passengers was forced to return to Paris shortly after take-off.

The flight landed safely back in Paris, the airline says.

Maintenance work could not be done on the plane, however, because it would have forced crew to exceed its “legally permitted duty hours.”

United says its customer service team is aiding passengers with meals and hotel accommodations tonight.

United says it has scheduled a new flight for tomorrow to accommodate passengers.

CHICAGO -- United Flight No. 1977 from Seattle skidded off the runway after landing at O'Hare International Airport at about 8 a.m. Wednesday.

According to United Airlines, the plane skidded after landing to the very end of the pavement.

Since it cannot go in reverse, the plane was towed to the gate.

Passengers say initially they didn't even know anything was wrong because the landing was perfect.

The plane came in during heavy snow and slick road conditions. United believes that's what caused the plane to skid, but the incident is under investigation.

No one was injured and the plane, a Boeing 737, was not damaged.
