Col Bale,
Thanks for starting this discussion. Merry Christmas to all!
Tipping point? – the assigning of the Second Marine Division and its attached outfits to carry out the assault on Betio. What other division in the US armed forces at that date could have successfully conducted the assault? Seriously, in November of 1943, what other US division had the amphibious training and combination of leadership that the Second Marine Division was able to bring to the battle? Shoup, Carslon, Edson, Crowe, Bonnyman, Bordelon, Hawkins, Leslie, Bale, Chamberlin, Ryan, … just to name a dozen, and there are so many more. Imagine if the US only had but two Marine divisions at the time and they were both engaged in the Southwest Pacific or rebuilding after losses from Guadalcanal, what division would have been available to successfully conduct the assault? As the Army’s 27th Division showed at Makin, every division wasn’t trained to the level that the Second Marine Division was. Imagine too the consequences if a lesser division had been assigned the role, the Japanese had been able to repulse the landing, our first across the reef assault on a fortified island had been unsuccessful, and then the US strategic planners were faced with the question, “Now what?” The whole amphibious doctrine of the Marine Corps would have been put in doubt and the strategic planning to put bombers within distance of Japan via the Central Pacific would have to be reexamined.
