Fri Jun 30, 2017 16:24

PFC George Bernard Murray, U.S. Marine Corps, B Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, was killed by gunshot wounds to the head and chest on 20 November 1943 and reported buried in Cemetery 33 on Tarawa. In November 2011, Chief Stone, while a member of the Department of Defense, submitted reports to JPAC using the RISC System noting that PFC Murray was NOT a match to any "Unknowns" in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl). Continued investigation by the Foundation uncovered additional information to confirm Chief Stone’s original reports that PFC Murray was NOT a most likely match to any “Unknowns” and was likely buried at an undiscovered location on Tarawa. As predicted, PFC Murray was recovered from the island and his identification was officially announced on 9 June 2017.
