PVT Joseph Carmine Carbone, U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, K Company, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, was reported “Missing in Action” on 20 November 1943 during the Battle of Tarawa. In November 2011, Chief Rick Stone, while a member of the Department of Defense, submitted reports to JPAC using the RISC System noting that PVT Carbone was not a match to any "Unknowns" in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl). In March 2012, the JPAC Lab requested a report from Chief Stone for a “short list” of possible matches to two sets of remains recovered by locals on Tarawa in April 2010 which were stored on the JPAC Lab shelf. PVT Carbone was on Chief Stone’s “short list” of possible matches. Continued investigation by the Foundation uncovered additional information to confirm Chief Stone’s original reports that PVT Carbone was not a most likely match to any “Unknowns” in the Punchbowl and affirmed his listing as a match to remains recovered in 2010. One of these sets of remains was finally identified by the Department of Defense as PVT Carbone on 17 July 2017.
